D slowly fought his way back to consciousness. Though his eyes were closed, his Hunter instincts told him that he was not alone in the room. He sat there, trying not to let who ever it was know he was awake. He heard breathing...and a heart beat. That was good. He could smell perfume...it seemed oddly familiar. It triggered no bad memories. He tasted...blood.
With a jolt, D's eyes flew open and he sat strait up in bed. The girl sitting in the chair next to his bed sat up as well, startled. He reached his hand out and grabbed her shoulder, pulling her close. He recognized her now...the young girl who had found him in the field. Rose was her name...and he was in her father's hospital.
"Hey, quit that!", she said indignantly.
Ignoring her, D looked up and down her neck, looking for puncture wounds. Finding none, he fell back into his bed with a sigh.
"Just what was that about?"
"Nothing...", replied the weakened Hunter. He felt himself growing gradually stronger as his body repaired it's self due to the fresh intake of blood.
"You were checking to see if you bit me, weren't you?", said the girl accusingly. D stared at her for a few moments before nodding his head.
"Don't worry, you didn't. Now, tell me, what the hell are you? You're not a Vampire, though you drink blood. You heal faster than a human, but you say you aren't one of the experiments...exactly what...who are you?"
"I am called D. Vampire Hunter D.", he said.
"Well, that doesn't explain anything.", she said. She waited for a reply, but it soon became apparent that D had nothing further to say. He sat up in bed and felt his back. His clothing had not been removed or repaired, and there was a gaping hole. Through it, his fully healed white flesh could be felt and seen.
Without further comment, D got to his feet. Rose was amazed that he could walk so soon, so it took her a moment to stand up and grab him as he began to walk unsteadily toward the door.
"Oh no Mister, no you don't. You're my responsibility until my father gets back, and I'm not letting you go anywhere without me. Especially since I don't even know what you are."
D had no comment for this, but he allowed the girl to help him down the hall. She took him out of the hospital and into the street. It was dusk, and the sun had just made it's way past the horizon. Perhaps already knowing what he needed, she took D down the street to a nearby tailor's shop.
They entered the tailor shop together. D looked around at the man's work, apparently finding it suitable.
"I need you to repair my clothing.", he told the tailor. The tailor was a short, cheerful man with a long black beard.
"All right then. If the young lady with you will step outside for a moment, we can get you undressed and have a look at you.", he said.
Rose looked as if she wanted to protest but saw that it would do no good and quietly walked outside. Within moments, the tailor has D stripped and re-dressed in a too large but nice looking shirt and pair of pants.
"You can come back in Rose!", yelled the tailor. Rose quickly complied and looked D up and down.
"Well, not the best looking outfit on you, but it will do until John fixes what you were wearing.", she said.
D simply nodded his head, bemused. The tailor John was busy surveying the damage to D's clothes and whistling.
"This ain't gonna be cheap, man. What do you offer as payment?"
D opened his pouch and dumped the contents out on the counter. It was a huge pile of gold coins. The tailor looked at them, his eyes bulging.
"Well, I'll be. I've never seen the like of them before...valuable coins you go there. I'll buy them off of you if you'd like. All totaled, I would say they are worth over 10,000 gil. That's the local currency...I can tell you aren't from around here."
D nodded his head, agreeing to the transaction. The bearded tailor opened his till and grabbed a few hands full of coins, placing them in D's pouch for him.
"I already took what I needed for my bill out of that amount...and you still have over 10,000 gil left. Come back in an hour and get your clothes. It should be some tough work...that is some rare and tough fabric around here, but I'm up to it."
With that, the short man turned around and pulled out a large pair of scissors and a needle. D turned and left the place, leaving the man to his work.
"Hey, where are we going now?", asked Rose.
"I need to find a weapon's merchant. In the state I am in now, I won't be able to swing my sword very well. I will need another one until I get my strength back."
"Oh, ok. Let's go visit Ned then, he is the best weapon smith around."
Rose hurried off, leading the way for D.
D looked over the racks of weapons with interest. His fine blade was sheathed on his back as usual, but it could hardly compare to some of the great blades he saw before him. D grabbed an elegantly made katana from the rack and swung it experimentally. It was finely balanced, and he immediately took a liking to the blade.
"How much?", he asked the smith.
"Well, that is a fine blade indeed. I couldn't let it go for any less than 8,000 gil. The asking price is 8,250 gil."
"Very well.", said D. He took the money from his pouch and placed it into the man's hands. The man's eyes bulged slightly. He had never seen so much money at one time before...that sword was the best he had ever made, and the price tag showed it. He hadn't expected to sell it for years to come.
"Thank you sir! I hope you are happy with the blade...now, let me tell you something about it. It holds within it the power of lightning. The lightning uses your magical energy...so the stronger your magical powers, the more damage it will do. That is the secret of this blade."
D placed the blade back in it's sheath and placed it on his back next to his old blade.
"Come along Rose...let us go back to the tailor. He should be done by now."
After retrieving his clothes, Rose escorted D back to the hospital. Clearly he was no longer injured, but she wasn't going to let him out of the sight until she figured out what he was. D had nowhere else to go in particular, so he went with her. Before entering the hospital, D grabbed Rose's hand.
"Here, take this for your help.", he said. D placed his pouch and remaining money in her hand.
"Oh no, it's not like I did anything. You're welcome to stay with us for a while, you don't need to pay."
"Take it...please."
"Well, ok, if you insist.", said Rose. She placed the pouch on her belt and grabbed D's hand, leading him back into the hospital.
OOC: Basically, I just got rid of all my money...starting and bonus money. Didn't want to bother adding up trivial things, and some things I wanted didn't fit with the story. I got a spark sword and spent the money to upgrade the masamune once...though it didn't fit into the story well. It just seems that D should have it already upgraded, so I took the money out for it. Called everything else even.
