After a day of training, Zabuza decided he was recovered enough to visit the nearby town. It was almost twilight when he started down the cobbled streets in search of answers. Few people were out in the streets, and those that were moved rapidly as if nightfall held much danger. He grabbed the shoulder of one man as he scurried past.
"Where am I?", demanded Zabuza.
"You're in Wutai, stranger. You'd better be off of these streets quickly.", said the man. "And get your hands off of my shirt." he added insolently, whirling away and disappearing between the aged buildings.
'Wherever Wutai is, it has seen better days.' thought Zabuza.
The town had many large buildings for one of it's size. Almost all of them were ancient and showed little signs of human care. The streets themselves were dirty and smelled of old food. This place was unlike any he had ever been before in his life. Not even dogs roamed the streets and the few children he saw needed no encouragement by their parents to run inside and go to bed. A few street lights flickered on as it darkened, but most of them were obviously out and had been for some time. It seemed that no one in the whole place cared.
As it darkened further the few lights that shone made eerie shadows upon the faces of the buildings, making some of them seem much more menacing that a building could possibly be. There was danger in the air here.
Zabuza smiled to himself. 'Let whatever danger come at will. I will not be scared as these other worthless people are.'
Even as Zabuza thought this, he noticed a shadow moving next to a building. He pretended not to notice. It was obvious that someone was there and trying to hide. They were actually quite skilled, but it seemed as if they were not used to dealing with people trained as they were.
He noticed a glint in the shadows and turned just in time to catch a thrown dagger. He heard noise and realized that it was laughter.
"You'll have to try harder than that if you wish to kill me.", he said, dropping the dagger onto the stones at his feet.
"What ever made you think that is what I was trying to do?", came a snide voice from the alley. A cloaked figure stepped forth from the shadows. His hands were empty, but he gave the impression that with one false move they would be very quickly with something sharp and deadly.
"I was merely testing you, and you passed. My...employer would like a word with you."
"And who, exactly, is your 'employer'?"
"Let us just say a man who wishes you to preform some small services for him in the future. Here!"
With that, the man tossed Zabuza a pouch. From the feel of it, it contained money. Zabuza looked thoughtful as the man disappeared into the shadows he had emerged from. Perhaps this place did have promise after all. Zabuza placed the pouch into his belt and continued his walk down the lonely street.
ooc: This is not actually anything important, just an idle explanation as to how it is that I wound up with local currency. Can be removed if you wish, only posted for continuity.
